The Outlaw Trail: Things to Do Near Belle Starr

Beyond the comfort of your cabin, Lake Eufaula offers a wealth of activities that blend outdoor adventure with rich frontier history.

The Legend of the Starr Family

The story of Belle Starr, born Myra Maybelle Shirley, is a blend of Southern grit and frontier rebellion. Raised with a classical education in Missouri, she was a talented pianist before the Civil War uprooted her life and led her into the company of outlaws like Jesse James and Cole Younger.

She eventually settled in Indian Territory at Younger’s Bend on the Canadian River. It was here that she became the “Bandit Queen,” notorious for rustling horses and bootlegging. Though she was murdered in an unsolved ambush in 1889, her legend and that of her family continues to haunt the shores of Lake Eufaula.
