A Guide to Camping on Lake Eufaula

Guides

Lake Eufaula’s 800+ miles of shoreline is known for fishing, boating, swimming, wildlife and is the perfect backdrop for a camping trip.

Lake Eufaula’s 800+ miles of shoreline is known for fishing, boating, swimming, wildlife and is the perfect backdrop for a camping trip. Located just 90 minutes from Tulsa, 2 hours from OKC and the Texas border, Lake Eufaula is the perfect destination for a weekend camping trip or longer stay.

The area has much to offer with two of Oklahoma’s state parks to explore; Arrowhead State Park and Lake Eufaula State Park. Both parks offer fun activities for the family while camping, including golf, fishing, swimming, playgrounds, bike trails, horseback riding, hiking trails, and more. When you need a break from the great outdoors, there are plenty of shopping and dining options near Eufaula and Checotah.

Picking the Right Camping Site

With so many campsite options at Lake Eufaula, you’ll just need to decide which part of the lake you want to visit, select a site with the amenities you want, and make a reservation (certain locations are first come, first serve).

Some campsites offer tent camping, cabins and RV or trailer parking, while others have limitations, be sure to check prior to arrival that the campground can accommodate your needs. Amenities, on-site activities, and access to the lake vary by location so you will want to take that into consideration when choosing your perfect spot.

Camping at one of the state parks can be a really good choice. This allows you to have direct access to the lake, plus extra amenities in an area maintained by the state (this means manicured grass and amenities in working order).

Planning your Lake Eufaula Camping Adventure

If you plan on fishing on Lake Eufaula (and we recommend you do!) make sure to have a current Oklahoma fishing license. Licenses can be bought online or at a local bait shop, a sporting goods store, or convenience stores. Children under 16 do not need a fishing license in Oklahoma. You’ll also want to bring supplies to prepare and cook your catch!

Planning your meals ahead of your trip can make your camping experience stress free! While you can find last minute food items in town in case you forget something, planning ahead can save you time and money! Pack protein filled snacks like nuts and jerky for midday treats. Make sure all food is packed in secure containers to avoid unwanted insects and animals.

Don’t forget the marshmallows, graham crackers, and chocolate for smores around the campfire!

What to Pack for Lake Eufaula Camping

There are a lot of sites that offer packing advice for camping, but here is our top 10 list for Lake Eufaula camping:

1. If you are tent camping don’t forget the tent, poles, the footprint, and stakes. Seems obvious, but trust us, this happens!

2. Sleeping bags and pillows are a must. We also suggest sleeping pads, they give a little cushion between you and the ground.

3. Cooking necessities – pots, pans, plates, and utensils. Some campgrounds have grill and picnic areas. If you pick one that doesn’t, be prepared with a propane camp stove or portable grill.

4. Pack headlamps, flashlights, and lanterns with plenty of extra batteries.

5. Camp chairs and a table. Even if your campground has a picnic area you will want some pop-up chairs for around your tent or RV.

6. First aid kit, sunscreen, hand sanitizer, and insect repellant.

7. Toiletries (soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, brush), painkillers (ibuprofen or aspirin), and any medications you need. Toilet paper, unless you really want to rough it. And check out this great camping hack for toothpaste

8. Clothing and gear. Check the weather before you head out. Plan on packing layers and throw in raingear just in case. Don’t forget clothing and tools for whatever activities you plan to do during your stay such as hiking boots, swimsuit, fishing poles, hat, riding gear, and life jackets.

9. Travel games and playing cards for the ride and nights.

10. Chargers for phones and other devices. If your site doesn’t offer electricity, make sure your phone is fully charged before you leave and throw in a battery pack. The packs are handy for when you are hiking or fishing.
